The Rhode Island state legislature is considering a bill that would create uncertainty regarding the status of all independent contractors in the state, and many are concerned with the implications.
Senate bill 2409, as it is known, would require the status of a worker to be determined by the Rhode Island workers’ compensation court, rather than the standards laid down by the Internal Revenue Service. According to a report by the Warwick Beacon, this bill could affect the status of all independent contractors and require the companies they work for to pay payroll taxes and premiums for disability and Workers’ Compensation insurance.”=
